Welsh Onion is a versatile perennial bunching onion. It divides from the base, and can be used as spring onions/scallions or green onions. It is quite hardy, actually originating in northern China or Siberia, not Wales like the name suggests.

For harvesting, if you want to use the slender bulbs, pull up the whole plant with the roots. If you only want the green onions, snip them off above the bulb and let them regrow. You can harvest almost year round.

Welsh Onions will divide from the base many times to eventually form a large clump. You can divide the clumps in spring or fall to separate them out to get a better yield, or to share with other gardeners.

They will flower, and you could cut off the flower heads if you want to increase bulb and leaf production. Otherwise the flowers are excellent food for pollinators, and produce seeds for replanting.

Growing Instructions

Sow seeds shallowly indoors in January or February, and plant outside once they have 2 or 3 true leaves. You may need to put them up one into bigger containers while they are inside, or just start them in larger pots instead of cell trays to start. You could try sowing throughout the season as well, and even direct sowing may work.

Excellent experience, simple to order, easy to pay, prompt delivery. As I have not planted seeds I will wait for a later time to weigh in on germination rates! Lovely experience so far, great selection of out of the norm seed options.
