Love chard and beet greens? Here's a perennial option that will live for 2-3+ years. This population was developed by Telsing Andrews in Ottawa. She started with an open cross of several leaf-beet accessions known to be somewhat perennial.
These plants will likely try to flower in their second year. You could try cutting off the flower stalks repeatedly to encourage more leaf production throughout the summer. Even if you do let them flower and set seed, the plants will likely keep living. (And maybe you want to let them flower as they smell like chocolate!)
The roots are likely edible when young, but they will probably get too tough to eat after a while.
Hardy to zone 7 for sure, and probably colder zones with lots of snow cover too, given the mix was developed in zone 5 Ottawa.
Growing Instructions
Growing Instructions
Direct sow or transplant as you would beets, but as the plants get older they will get big- so you may want to space them about 2 feet apart. You could sow radishes or arugula or another quick crop in the space in between in the meantime.
