A hardy cottage garden classic, Money Plant is usually grown for its beautiful papery silver seed pods, but almost all parts of this plant are edible! Being in the brassica family, the leaves taste like mustard greens- delicious! The beautiful purple flowers are also edible and add a pop of colour to salads, desserts, and drinks. The peeled roots are edible as well. The seeds can be made into a mustard substitute.
First year plants form a low basal rosette of leaves, and flower and set seed in their second year. The flowers come out very early, providing important food for pollinators, notable syrphid flies whose larvae eat aphids. When flowering they stand about 4-5 feet tall.
Money plant grows well in part shade or full sun, making it an excellent multi-purpose vegetable for the forest garden. Money plant is not picky about soil. It is drought tolerant, and will self seed if allowed.
