Miner's lettuce is a succulent cold-hardy leafy green. It is a sought after wild green native to western North America. It tastes mild and juicy, and is excellent raw or cooked.
The plant was eaten by miners to prevent scurvy in the California Gold Rush. The leaves, stems, and flowers are edible, and are an excellent source of vitamin C. It can be eaten in winter and spring. Miners lettuce prefers to grow in shady, moist areas. Try growing in an unheated cold frame over the winter for continuous harvests. Snip off the stems and it will regrow.
This plant is tough, surviving snow and frost. It does tend to get bitter as the weather gets hot. It will self seed if allowed to flower, and establish a robust carpet that will come back year after year. It makes an excellent edible groundcover.
While it is technically an annual, miner's lettuce acts as a perennial given that it self seeds easily.
50% of sales from this variety go to Sovereign Seeds, an Indigenous-led initiative dedicated to the revitalization of Indigenous seed and food sovereignty in so-called Canada.
