Horn of Plenty, also know as Doucette d’Alger, is a tender green with a slightly nutty flavour and pleasant bitterness. It’s a cousin of Mâche (corn salad), but has larger leaves and can grow almost year round in mind climates. It really shines as a leafy green in mid-summer when other greens are bolting, but it also produces throughout mind winters here in the unheated greenhouse, providing salad in January!

The vibrant pink flowers attract pollinators, and were a favourite of an endangered Western bumblebee in my garden this summer.

This plant is easy to grow, and will self seed readily. The seeds drop to the ground once they mature.

Horn of Plenty is wild green native to the Mediterranean and northern Africa, where it grows wild in olive groves and grain fields. It deserves to be grown more in North America!

30-40 days to edible leaves.

Growing Instructions

Direct sow spring to summer and thin to 6-12 inches apart. Alternately, start indoors in pots 4-6 weeks before planting out. Germination can be slow and erratic. Soaking the seeds in hydrogen peroxide right before sowing seems to improve germination.
