Sorrel is a reliable perennial vegetable with a delightful lemony taste. This is a must-have, low maintenance perennial vegetable. It can be used raw in salads, or cooked like a lemony spinach substitute. My favourite way to use sorrel is in spanakopita- the leaves add a lemony brightness that makes the dish even better than the traditional.

The leaves can get a bit bitter in the heat of summer, but providing afternoon shade may help to extend the harvest. Cut the plant back to the ground when it tries to send up seed stalks, and it will respond by pushing out tender new leaves.

They like rich, moist soil in full sun or part shade, but will succeed in many situations once established.

The plants will grow slowly to form clumps, which can be divided every few years to refresh them. They do not spread via runners like the weedy sheep sorrel.

Growing Instructions

Sow indoors about 6 weeks before last frost. Seeds do not require cold stratification. Plant out about 1-2 feet apart after last frost. Divide plant clumps after 3 years or so.

Shipping & Returns

By placing an order, customers agree to the shipping & refund policies detailed on this page.

Most orders are sent via Canada Post to keep costs low.

Shipping within Canada

We ship seeds in Canada via Canada Post's regular letter mail, which is an untracked service, and usually takes 1-4 weeks to arrive once we fulfill your order, but occasionally letter mail takes up to 6 weeks, especially to the Eastern provinces and rural areas.

Customers can now opt for tracked, express shipping options at checkout if you require faster delivery and/or tracking.

Larger bulbs and plants are usually sent via tracked flat rate box.
