Aronia is a cold hardy shrub that produces small black berries famed for their high antioxidant levels. They are native to Eastern Canada, and are easy to grow. The flavour is not too sweet, a little tart, and a little astringent. Berries ripen in late summer and hang on the bushes until fall, continuing to sweeten over time. Many people prefer to make them into preserves instead of eating them fresh.

I harvested these seeds from landscaping plants in Sechelt, right beside the beach, from the most abundant shrubs. The flavour from all the plants was good and juicy.

Aronia can be tricky to grow from seed, requiring a long stratification: warm (30 days), then cold (120 days), then warm, then seeds should sprout in a few weeks. However, I have received a customer report that several seeds sprouted during the first warm stratification after about 2 weeks! So check on your seeds often, and pot up any seedlings that have sprouted, as they don't need to go through the rest of the stratification steps.

Growing Instructions

1. Soak seeds for 24 hours. Mix seeds with a moist medium, place in a plastic bag or other container.
2. Place seeds in a warm place, about 20 degrees C, for 30 days. Check every week for any sprouting seeds, and pot those up.
3. Then move to the fridge or somewhere else close to 5 degrees for 120 days. Check occasionally for sprouting seeds, and pot those up.
4. Then sow seeds 1/4 inch deep in potting mix in a warm place. Warm daytime temps (25C) and lower night temps (18C) can help germination.
5. Seeds should sprout within a month. Keep watered.

NOTE: I have received a customer report that several seeds sprouted during the first warm stratification after about 2 weeks! So check on your seeds often, and pot up any seedlings that have sprouted, as they don't need to go through the rest of the stratification steps.
