We hope to have seeds of this variety available in December 2026

9-Star Perennial Broccoli is an endangered sprouting variety that produces numerous medium cauliflowers year after year. Plants can live for several years if the cauliflowers are cut off before they open up and go to seed. Generally it produces one larger cauliflower head in spring, which you should harvest, and then several smaller heads will sprout up around the crown. It's called nine star because it will usually sprout about nine small heads. The leaves are also edible and tasty, like kale.

This variety is closer to wild brassicas, as it only starts making florets in its second year. There is variation in head size and how compact they are. Give it lots of nutrients for the most florets. After a few years the plants will get tired. You can try pruning them back heavily to reinvigorate them, or you may need to start a new crop eventually. Some folks recommend pruning the plants back every fall as well.

It may be possible to propagate these plants via cuttings, and avoid having to start them from seed again. After my plants flowered, they resprouted many shoots from the base, some of which I cut off and rotted directly in the ground, or in water. Time will tell if the cuttings survive the winter, but it seems promising.

PLEASE NOTE- There is chance some seeds may have crossed with Homesteader's Kaleidoscopic Perennial Kale Grex, and/or Candy Floss Kale. I isolated the plants with a pollination cage and used flies for pollination, but I did find a honey bee in the cage once so some crossing is possible. If you find any interesting individuals with colourful or other unique traits, please let me know, as it may be the start of an interesting new breeding project!

Growing Instructions

Sow in spring indoors or in a greenhouse a few weeks before last frost, and plant out when the chance of frost has passed. Space a few feet apart as the plants can get quite large. Put lots of rotted manure or compost in the planting hole, as these plants are heavy feeders. Side dress with more compost in subsequent years. Plants may require staking.

Shipping & Returns

We ship seeds via Canada Post within Canada for $6 to $8 depending on weight, and Internationally for a flat rate of $20*. Shipping costs to the US will include the cost of a phytosanitary inspection and certificate, as well as tariffs.

Live plants, bulbs, and bulbils can only be shipped within Canada.

Shipping in Canada

We ship seeds in Canada via regular letter mail, which is an untracked service, and usually takes 1-3 weeks to arrive once we fulfill your order, but occasionally orders take longer, especially to the Eastern provinces and rural areas.

Customers can now opt for tracked, express shipping options at checkout if you require faster delivery.

Larger bulbs and plants are sent via tracked flat rate box.

Shipping to the US

Shipping charges to the US will also now include a government phytosanitary inspection and certificate. This will be bundled into the shipping cost. We ship via Canada Post, and any applicable duties will be calculated at checkout. So far (as of Sept 1, 2025), it's looking like there are no duties charged on seeds.

Please expect delays for US shipping, as during busy times it can take up to 2 weeks for us to book a phytosanitary inspection.
