Pepicha is a Mexican herb that is similar to cilantro, but even better! The flavour is complex with notes of cilantro, citrus, and cumin. Unlike cilantro, pepicha thrives in hot weather: no need to worry about bolting as the flowers are edible too.

Pepicha could also be a good substitute for those who have the "cilantro tastes like soap" gene. On a recent farm tour one of those people tried pepicha and LOVED it- they reported no soapy notes at all.

I love to use pepicha in place of cilantro in Mexican dishes such as salsas and tacos. It is also delicious in salads and eggs. I actually prefer the flavour to cilantro, and it's so much easier to grow in the heat. It's a short-lived perennial in zones 9 and above, otherwise it's easily grown as an annual.

One of its best traits is that pepicha can be dried for winter use. It holds its flavour well when dried, unlike cilantro (or papalo, its cousin).

Pepicha is native to Mexico, specifically the Oaxaca region, which is known for its incredible food. It is used in the Oaxacan dish, Sopa de Guias, zucchini soup made with squash blossoms and vines. It is used to add flavour and colour to rice and poached fish. Pepicha falls in the category of quelites, or wild greens.

It also has medicinal uses.

Each packet will contain a pinch of seeds, which will contain both black mature seeds, and immature brown seeds. Seed will have their fluffy pappus attached, and must remain intact for germination.

Growing Instructions

Sow seeds shallowly indoors in late spring 4-8 weeks before last frost, and plant outside May-June. These plants like heat, so use a heat mat or place flats in a warm spot, like on top of the fridge. Take care not to break the seeds. Seeds can also be direct sown in late May and June.

Growing conditions: Full sun to part shade. Well-draining garden soil. Can be grown in pots.
