Armenian Cucumber is one of the oldest vegetable varieties. Botanically speaking, it is a melon, which has its advantages. First, these cucumbers are never bitter, even when very large! They have a delicious crisp and fresh flavour- no need to peel the skin. And second, they withstand heat better than regular cucumbers, which extends the harvest into late summer. These can also get up to 3 feet long, but are best enjoyed around 12 inches long. These are very prolific! Can be eaten fresh or pickled.

Other names for this vegetable include: yard-long cucumber, snake cucumber, snake melon, chanbar in Persian, tirozî in Kurdish, sheng in Semnani, uri in Japanese, acur in Turkish, kakadee in Hindi, tar in Punjabi, طرح in Arabic, commarella or tortarello in Italian.

Growing Instructions

Growing instructions: Start indoors 4-5 weeks before last frost, or direct seed in May-June. Needs warm soil to germinate. Space plants 10-12 inches apart. Cucumbers can grow along the ground ok, but training them onto a trellis is recommended.
